I spent a long time looking for a first hunting rifle. The requirements were specific: thumbhole stock, .308 Winchester, reliable in all weather, and something I'd be happy to carry for the next twenty years. The Sako S20 Camo ticked every box.
At around €1,800 it's not a budget purchase, but it's not trying to be. This is a serious rifle for serious use.
What works well: The fit is exceptional. The stock is adjustable, length of pull, cheek piece height, so you can dial it in precisely to your mount. It shoulders naturally and the thumbhole grip makes long sits in a high seat significantly more comfortable. Accuracy is what you'd expect from Sako: consistent, predictable, with good factory ammo delivering tight groups at hunting distances.
The .308 Winchester is one of the most versatile hunting cartridges in Europe. Flat enough for open country, hardhitting enough for anything you're likely to encounter on this continent.
The one honest criticism: it's not light. If you're covering serious ground on foot, you'll notice the weight by the end of the day. For driven hunts and high seat work, it's a non issue. For mountain stalking, something lighter might serve you better.
Verdict: If you want a rifle that will last a lifetime and perform every time you ask it to, the S20 is worth every euro.
